Abstract: Periodontal diseases are the most prevalent chronic inflammatory condition worldwide, affecting over 11 billion people and ranking as a leading cause of tooth loss, systemic comorbidities (including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and adverse pregnancy outcomes), and severe impairments in quality of life. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which bear 80% of the global burden, these diseases are amplified by structural inequities: inadequate infrastructure, severe workforce shortages, high out-of-pocket costs, and fragmented health systems. The result is a self-reinforcing cycle of poor oral health
that deepens poverty and widens health disparities.PERIO-EQUITY 2030 is a dedicated symposium that convenes clinician- scientists, implementation researchers, health-policy experts, and LMIC-based innovators to bridge the gap between cutting- edge periodontal research and real-world, context-specific action. By reframing “perio” not as a niche dental specialty but as a global public-health priority, the meeting will co-create translational roadmaps that are scientifically rigorous, locally owned, culturally relevant, and sustainably scalable within resource-constrained settings.Over the next five years, PERIO- EQUITY 2030 will catalyse concrete, equity-driven, and sustainable agendas that integrate novel diagnostics, minimally invasive therapies, community-based prevention models, and policy innovations—delivering measurable improvements in oral health outcomes while ensuring long-term environmental, financial, and system-level sustainability for the populations that need them most.
